Local Celebrations and Events
The traditional celebrations in Almuñécar are colourful and varied. They include carnivals with the traditional burial of sardines. Other events of interest are:
Celebration in honour of the Virgen de la Antigua. 9-15 August
At this event the locals commemorate the victory of Lope de Valenzuela over the Moor Aben Aboo, which took place in 1569, in addition to the miraculous intercession of their patron saint. The procession takes place at night at sea and it heads to Puerta del Mar Beach. Numerous adorned boats accompany the Virgin on this journey that ends with an extraordinary firework display at Los Peñones del Santo.

Jazz Festival on the Coast. July
This festival, which has been running for over two decades, is the most important event of its kind on the entire Andalusian coast. Jazz on the Coast, which is an extension of the event that takes place in Granada in November, is one of the oldest international jazz festivals in Europe.

Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Celebrations in Los Marinos. 16 July
During this festivity the statue of the Virgen del Carmen is paraded along the Paseo de San Cristóbal before it reaches Rincón de la China, where dances take place to the sounds of music by the "Niñas de la Hermandad". An outdoor mass is then hosted here. At the end, and weather permitting, the statue is boarded onto a boat before heading to El Peñón de San Cristóbal.
